Vinyl Jacket from Newcastle or "Wy aye Lam" as they put it, have been busy on social media floating around sneaky previews of their forth coming EP 'Safari'. With new a music video Jupiter already out I was eager to see Ben, Jack, David and Matt perform live at the one of the North East’s most loved music venues The Head Of Steam.
And what a performance it was, the four guys gave it their all in front of a sold out crowd. Their music has really grown and developed since the 'Painting Stations' and 'Red Light' days and of course there have been changes to the members of the band but for my money they are definitely heading in the right direction where the music is concerned.
A wet and windy February in Newcastle isn’t the warmest of places but Vinyl Jacket turned up the heat tonight, playing one of my favourite songs from the album 'Corona'. The track was fast paced and had everybody including myself up and dancing. Now The Head of Steam is a intimate venue but despite that the north east quartet made sure everyone was enjoying themselves on a large scale.
Since the Brits, Beyonce has seemed to have had an impact on Vinyl Jacket as Ben said for every independent woman there is an independent man. Usually it can be a risky choice for a band to change direction in music however this change seemed to work for them. The guys had gone all macho and dominant on us when they sang their track 'Man', a little different from what I was expecting but the audience seemed to appreciate it.
With support from Dalaro who are another indie pop/rock band from Newcastle, they played some interesting tunes tonight. I think these guys are a band to look out for.
Vinyl Jacket are launching their EP at the Cluny 2 on the 19th of April.
